Project:

NTPC - Generator Rebuild

Project Overview:

Grounded Contracting was engaged by NTPC (Northwest Territories Power Corporation) to complete a comprehensive generator rebuild, restoring critical power generation equipment to dependable operating condition.

In remote northern communities, generator reliability is essential. When a major generation unit requires rebuilding, precision, planning, and technical expertise are required to return it to service safely and efficiently. Grounded Contracting delivered a structured rebuild process that ensured the unit was re-commissioned with confidence and long-term reliability in mind.

The Client Environment:

NTPC provides electricity to communities across the Northwest Territories, operating isolated and off-grid power generation facilities in some of Canada’s most demanding environments.

Because many northern communities rely on localized generation, each generator unit plays a vital role in maintaining stable power supply. Equipment downtime must be minimized, and restoration must meet strict safety and performance standards.

THE CHALLENGE

The project required:

  • Safe isolation and disassembly of the generator system

  • Inspection and assessment of mechanical and electrical components

  • Identification of wear, damage, and performance issues

  • Precise refurbishment and component replacement

  • Careful reassembly and alignment

  • Electrical testing and re-commissioning

Given the importance of uninterrupted service, the rebuild had to be executed efficiently while maintaining strict safety compliance.

THE SOLUTION

Grounded Contracting provided full industrial electrical support throughout the generator rebuild process, including:

  • Generator disconnection and system isolation

  • Electrical component inspection and testing

  • Removal and reinstallation of critical assemblies

  • Control wiring and termination verification

  • Alignment and reassembly coordination

  • System diagnostics and functional testing

  • Re-commissioning and operational verification

Working closely with NTPC personnel and mechanical teams, Grounded Contracting ensured the rebuild process met manufacturer specifications and operational requirements.

This wasn't just a simple installation; it was a full-scope project that encompassed:

01

Execution & Technical Precision

Generator rebuilds demand both electrical and mechanical coordination. Each step — from disassembly to final testing — must be methodical and documented.

Grounded Contracting’s team prioritized:

  • Maintaining equipment integrity during disassembly

  • Protecting sensitive electrical components

  • Verifying insulation resistance and system continuity

  • Ensuring proper torque specifications and alignment

  • Confirming safe integration into the facility’s distribution system

Before returning the generator to service, thorough testing procedures were completed to confirm performance, safety, and reliability.

02

Safety & Compliance

Power generation facilities operate under stringent safety standards. Throughout the rebuild, Grounded Contracting maintained compliance with:

  • Electrical code requirements

  • Utility operational procedures

  • Lockout/Tagout protocols

  • Arc flash safety standards

  • Industrial site safety regulations

All work was performed by qualified industrial electricians experienced in generator systems and utility infrastructure.

The generator rebuild successfully restored dependable performance to NTPC’s essential power system.

Outcomes included:

  • Improved operational reliability

  • Extended service life of the generator unit

  • Reduced risk of unexpected downtime

  • Verified electrical performance and safety compliance

  • Confidence in long-term system stability

By returning the generator to service efficiently and safely, Grounded Contracting helped reinforce NTPC’s ability to deliver consistent electricity to northern communities.
