Project:
Residential House Electrical Upgrades
Project Overview:
Grounded Contracting completed a series of residential electrical upgrades designed to improve safety, increase system capacity, and enhance everyday functionality. The project modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure, bringing it up to current code requirements and performance expectations.
As homes age, electrical systems often struggle to keep up with modern power demands. Today’s households commonly operate larger-load appliances and equipment that older systems were never designed to support. This upgrade ensured the property could safely handle both current electrical needs and future additions.
In addition, homes built during certain periods may contain aluminum branch wiring, which presents unique safety concerns if not properly maintained or upgraded.
The Homeowner’s Needs:
The homeowners required a safe, reliable electrical system capable of supporting larger electrical loads while addressing potential hazards associated with aging infrastructure.
Many older homes were not originally designed to handle:
-
High-powered kitchen appliances
-
Home office equipment
-
Entertainment systems
-
Electric vehicle (EV) chargers
-
Hot tubs and spas
-
Air conditioning units
-
Modern lighting systems
-
Expanded HVAC loads
THE CHALLENGE
Outdated electrical systems can create a number of concerns, including:
-
Limited panel capacity
-
Overloaded circuits
-
Inconsistent breaker performance
-
Aging wiring
-
Insufficient grounding
-
Code compliance issues
-
Aluminum wiring connections prone to overheating and expansion/contraction
Aluminum wiring, in particular, can pose fire risks if connections are loose, improperly terminated, or not maintained with approved devices. Preventative maintenance, proper connectors, and in some cases partial or full rewiring are critical to reducing these risks.
The goal of the project was to upgrade key components of the system, ensure it could handle larger-load appliances safely, and address any wiring concerns while minimizing disruption to the household.
THE SOLUTION
Grounded Contracting completed comprehensive residential electrical upgrades, including:
-
Electrical panel improvements and capacity upgrades
-
Dedicated circuits for larger-load appliances (such as EV chargers, hot tubs, and air conditioning units)
-
Circuit additions and load rebalancing
-
Inspection and correction of aluminum wiring connections where required
-
Replacement of outdated or unsafe wiring components
-
Installation of updated fixtures and devices
-
Improved grounding and bonding
-
Code compliance corrections
All work was performed to current Canadian Electrical Code standards and inspected as required.
